SUPERDREAM MUTATION, 1993

In 1993, Peter Halley created the online digital print Superdream Mutation to benefit “The Thing,” Wolfgang Staehle's pioneering art bulletin board, a pre-Web online forum.

Users were invited to download the digital file and print their own copy of the work at home. Superdream Mutation was offered for sale for $25.

Superdream Mutation is a digital version of Halley’s painting Superdream, 1993. It was made utilizing the various textural effects available in early Adobe software. It was designed as a gray-scale image so that it could be printed on a black-and-white printer — color printers were not yet widely available.

Halley wanted to make an edition created and distributed solely by digital means — which was only materially realized when it was downloaded and printed by the purchaser.

At the time, Superdream Mutation was not a big success — only three people purchased the print for $25, including the artist Rainer Ganahl.

To make your own copy of Superdream Mutation, just download the GIF file above and print it at home.

The choice and size of paper and the placement of the image on the page is entirely up to you.
